I WISH THERE WERE SOME WAY THAT WE COULD BE,
SOME WAY WE COULD EACH HEAR ONE ANOTHER’S GRIEF.
I TRY TO TELL YOU ABOUT THE PAIN I FEEL,
ALL YOU CAN HEAR IS ALL THE FEAR YOU FIND SO REAL.
YOU TRY TO TELL ME WHAT YOU KNOW IS RIGHT,
ALL I CAN HEAR IS THAT YOU WANT TO FIGHT.
AND THE LOVE WE NEED TO RECONCILE US
IS COVERED IN AN ICY COAT OF FEAR
AND THE PEACE WE NEED SO MUCH BETWEEN US
IS A PEACE WE DO NOT SEEM TO SHARE.
IF I LOOKED ACROSS AT YOU AND YOU AT ME,
IF WE COULD ENGAGE OUR EYES WHAT WOULD WE SEE?
LIKE A STORM ACROSS THE PLAINS, BLOWING DUST SO HIGH,
THERE’S A STORM DEEP IN OUR HEARTS THAT BLOWS ACROSS OUR EYES.
IF YOU COULD JUST SEE WHO I AM AND I COULD JUST SEE YOU,
WOULD WE RIDE THE STORM OUT, AND WOULD WE FIND THE CALM?
AND MAY THE PEACE WE NEED TO RECONCILE US
MAKE A WAY FOR LOVE DEEP IN OUR HEARTS.
AND MAY IT CALM THE STORMY WINDS THAT BLOW
AND MAY WE FIND THE WORDS WE NEED FOR PEACE.
I wrote this song in the middle nineties for a situation that arose in a church in which I was helping a friend by substituting for six weeks. In thinking about the lyrics along with the current divisions in our nation, our churches, and our social and economic structures, I am thinking that they fit our own time as well. Peace! Hilary
