IN GOD WE TRUST

In God We Trust

Psalm 25:1-10

If the time has come for love
to take the front of the line in our lives
then the time has come to trust
the God of all love.
The time for love and placing trust in God
is about allowing God to be God—
a time for us to be a little less cynical,
a little more credulous,
a little less unbending,
a little more resilient,
a little less ego-driven
and a little more hope-identified.
The time has come for love,
the time is past for hate.
The time has come for peace,
the time is past for fear.
The time has come to live our lives to the full,
and the time is past for darkness and despair and death.
“In God we trust”
is more than a slogan on a coin.
It is more than an easy euphemism.
It is not a clarion call to value,
in the name of God,
all the things God is against,
or to bolster fear.
It is more than an excuse for us to
continue making our decisions
based on our fear.
We cannot use our faith
as a way to separate us by
race, economics, religion, or gender.
We cannot allow the things God is for:
prayer, salvation, hope, peace—love itself—
to become weapons and threats
held over the heads of those
our fear has caused us to distrust.
Love takes courage,
and the time is past for fear to rule our lives.
“In God we trust”
must become a way of courageous living
for those who have come to the reality
that the time has come for love.
